Real Presence of Christ!
Corpus Christi is celebrated all over the Catholic world recognizing the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. We believe that through transubstantiation, bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Christ. Who said so? Jesus Christ did when He said, “This is my body and this is my blood!” How much more can He be direct in saying so.
Other Christian denominations also have communion. However, some say that it is a symbol of Christ’s body and blood, sometimes it is the body and blood or it may be the body and blood. Well, there is no doubt about it in the Catholic faith.
IT IS THE BODY AND BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST!
In my previous life as a Travel Agent and Tour Director, I have visited some Eucharistic Miracle sites. Two of them stand out in my mind - San Francesco Church in Lanciano, Italy, and St. Stephen Church in Santarem, Portugal.
The Eucharistic Miracle in Lanciano, Italy had been quite famous and one of my pilgrim groups in the 80’s wanted to visit. After some research, we finally made it after a long bus ride from Rome. There, we learned that in the 8
century, a Basilian monk was celebrating mass but during the consecration, he had serious doubts about the Eucharist being the real body and blood of Jesus. Immediately, the host turned to flesh and the wine into blood. Since then, the host turned flesh was placed in a monstrance and the blood into a glass cup.

In 1971 and again in 1981, serious scientific studies were carried out by doctors who ruled that the flesh was of cardiac membrane origin and the blood was human with the type AB. Furthermore, it was confirmed that these didn’t have any trace of preservatives.
The miracle in Santarem, Portugal had a little story behind it. In the 13
century, a woman who had a philandering husband sought the advice of a sorceress. The sorceress said that the price of her services was a consecrated host. Out of desperation, the wife went to receive communion but took it out of her mouth and kept it in a handkerchief. Almost immediately blood gushed out as if she had cut her hand deeply. She ran to her house and put the blood-stained handkerchief with the host turned flesh into the bottom of the trunk. When her husband arrived, they saw a bright light emanating from the trunk.
She confessed what she did to her husband who quickly repented of his ways. They, then, took the miraculous host to the priest who put it in a wax container.
Another miracle occurred when, the following day, the wax container broke into pieces and the host was enclosed in a glass pyx.
This Eucharistic Miracle was not so famous in the Philippines in the ’80s.
My miracle story is that after coming from a pilgrimage to Fatima, we made a “toilet stop” in Santarem. My curiosity about this quaint little town led me to walk around and found a sign that says “To the Eucharistic Miracle”. Considering that it wasn’t a long stop, I ran towards it and entered the church – and what a discovery! I returned to the bus and told other pilgrims about it. Needless to say, we stopped to pray there for hours and missed our dinner in Lisbon. But it was all worth it.
